Several studies are circulating online, acknowledging the many adverse effects of sitting such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, colon cancer, and increased risk of heart disease. With these alarming results, the American Medical Association (AMA) provided a policy which recommends organizations to offer alternatives to sitting to work all day, including standing desk converters.
A study conducted by BBC and the University of Chester shows that standing increases the heart rate (around 10 beats per minute). This can mean burning 50 more calories per hour than sitting. When computed in a year, that is an amazing calorie burn of 30,000 or more and losing at least 8 pounds of fat.
Losing unwanted fats by standing is a great motivation to start today. But remember, standing should not only be confined in the workplace, but it can also be extended to your usual daily activities.
STAND IN YOUR MORNING ROUTINE.
Make it a point to take a stand preparing your meals, reading a newspaper, and watching tv while eating your breakfast.
STAND WHEN YOU’RE WORKING.
Aside from standing while working in the office with the use of your standing desk converter, standing while working at home is even a welcome addition. Start with doing your laundry while standing, cleaning your room or when having a needed sorting of your personal files.
STAND WHEN YOU’RE WAITING
Some local banks provided chairs only for those who have an inquiry, want to open an account or require assistance from bank personnel. But when the bank transactions are limited to deposits, withdrawals, and payments, clients are required to stand. Take this opportunity and be mindful of the fact that you are using more energy, thus burning more calories.
STAND DURING YOUR COFFEE BREAK
Take a walk, talk with your officemates while having an update with your team or boss. Take this chance to do some stretching and walking or standing while having a bite of your favorite tuna sandwich or drinking your latte. This will help metabolize calories quickly and you will eat the proper amount of food. You’re prone to eat less and metabolize calories more quickly when you eat in the standing position.
STAND WHILE TALKING ON THE PHONE
You have to admit that it is more comfortable to sit while talking on the phone. But the goal is to burn more calories while standing, so start walking and standing while on the phone. Also, standing while on the phone keeps you alert and focused especially when you are talking to your boss.
